Using Lasers to Treat Nail Fungus

Using Lasers to Treat Nail Fungus

Posted Feb 03, 2016 by: Mary Bidgood-Wilson FNP CNM

Punxsutawney Phil has rendered his decision – it’s going to be an early spring! Soon, will be taking our strappy sandals out of storage and scheduling  our pedicures. Are your toenails ready to come out of hiding, or have you noticed a thickening, cloudy or yellowing of your toenails? If so, you may have a toenail fungus.

Toenail fungus develops by getting in through cracks in your nail. The warm and damp environment found in our shoes is perfect for a fungus to grow and spread. Without treatment, the nail infection can spread to your other toenails, or even your fingernails. Additionally, the nail fungus can spread to other members of your household.

There are many treatments available to treat nail fungus. Their effectiveness will be highly dependent on the type of fungus and how embedded it is in the toenail. Treatments can include prescribed topical creams that are applied to the nail, surgery to remove the infected nail followed by creams applied to the area, and antifungal prescription pills.  Recently, there have been some very promising results with the use of lasers to treat nail fungus.

There are significant advantages to laser treatments over the other methods. Laser treatments are fast and painless. Other treatments require daily application of topicals, over an extended period of time, used alone or in conjunction with a prescription pill. Use of prescription pills is a lengthy treatment and may or may not help. And, as with any medication, it comes with possible side effects of nausea, vomiting, headaches and, in some individuals, may cause liver damage.

With any treatment for nail fungus, patience is key. In order to see the effectiveness, the nail must grow from the nail bed outward and that can take up to six months.
