Summer Sun Safety

Summer Sun Safety

Posted Jun 29, 2016

Mary Bidgood-Wilson FNP CNM

Now that summer is in full swing, we are spending more time outside enjoying the beaches and lakes, outdoor sports and activities. With the additional time we spend outdoors, we need take extra precautions to protect ourselves from harmful effects of the sun on our skin. Excessive exposure to the sun can cause significant changes in the upper and lower levels of our skin, premature aging and skin cancer.

According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is the second most common form of cancer in young adults 15-19 years old. New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont have the highest rates of melanoma skin cancer in the country.

Protecting Your Skin

We can all enjoy these warm summer months with just a few precautions.

·      Apply a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen liberally to all exposed skin 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

·      The sun’s rays are strongest between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. During these hours limit your exposure, seek shade or wear protective clothing, wide brimmed hats and sunglasses.

How do I choose the right sunscreen?

Although sunscreen should be applied year-round, during the warm spring and summer months when we spend more time outside with more of our skin exposed, applying sunscreen takes on even greater importance. Look for products labeled as broad spectrum sunscreen, which will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.  UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn, while UVA rays are the main contributors to skin cancer and premature aging.

We recommend our clients use a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 to 50 year-round. You will need 1oz of sunscreen, approximately the size of a shot-glass, to cover exposed areas of your skin, for the average individual.

Meredith Bay Laser and Skincare Center recommends Dr. Zein Obagi’s ZO Skin Health products. The skin care line features Oclipse® Smart Tone SPF 50 which matches your skin tone combined with a broad spectrum sunscreen; Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection while  smoothing and priming skin for even makeup application; and recently introduced, Oclipse® Sun Spray SPF 50 offers a one touch, non-greasy, weightless feel in an all-angle spray for face and body. Additionally, it provides a 12-hour, time-release antioxidant complex that guards against photo-damage.
