Rosacea typically affects adults between 30 - 50 years of age. It is genetically predisposed and most commonly found in women with SPT 1 and 2 with Irish, English, Welsh, Scandinavian and Scottish background. Rosacea is a chronic, progressive, and inflammatory condition that creates a multitude of cutaneous and ocular symptoms.
Rosacea is probably the most over-diagnosed, self-diagnosed or "internet-diagnosed" (and frequently misdiagnosed) skin condition.
Redness that stays put and does not change is not Rosacea.
Telangiectasia alone is not Rosacea
Flushing / blushing alone are not Rosacea.
The National Rosacea Society has developed a system for classifying and diagnosing this condition. The system includes: distinction between primary and secondary features and subtypes or distinct patterns. To correctly diagnose Rosacea, one or more of the following features must be present.
Burning or stinging
Almost all Rosacea patients experience physical discomfort in some form. Sometimes it is outright pain, pulsating pain or searing sensation.
Plaques
Plaques are clusters of papules and are seen as larger red areas among other papules and pustules. These areas may be elevated without any other changes to the epidermis.
Dry Appearance
Note if there is rough, dry appearing skin. Scaling may be a sign of co-existing seborrheic dermatitis or irritation. Central face may be rough and scaling.
Edema
Edema normally appears in either peri-orbital, glabellar (between brows), or malar (on cheeks). Edema may follow a prolonged flushing. Sometimes soft edema may last for days.
Ocular symptoms include:
Tearing, redness. telangiectases, foreign body sensation (gritty feeling), burning, stinging, itching, dryness, light sensitivities and blurred vision or decreased visual activity.
